Cosmologists Predict A Static Universe In 3 Trillion Years

When Dutch astronomer Willem de Sitter proposed a static model of the universe in the early 1900s, he was some 3 trillion years ahead of his time.

Canada considering MS OOXML

It's called Open XML. Microsoft created it and Canada's considering adopting it. The problem is that "Microsoft is attempting to achieve ISO standardization of a proprietary format in order to prevent the widespread adoption of the OpenDocument format, which could threaten the dominance of Microsoft's own Office suite"

http://basilatlarge.blogspot.com/2007/05/microsoft-office-format-being-adopted.html

"As many have already commented:
1. We already have a completely open and free standard OpenDocument Format (ISO/IEC 26300:2006) which is superior and we don't want duplication of standards
2. OOXML is far to complex and unclear which makes it extremely hard to implement in software. In practice only one company (Microsoft) is able to implement it, which again creates monopoly
3. OOXML is created by only one company, while OpenDocument Format is created by cooperation across industry partners
4. OOXML contains binary blobs for which only one company knows the true format, so OOXML is not an open and free format
5. OOXML has numerous contradictions inside of it and it also contradicts existing ISO standards
6. OOXML is completely untested. By going through ECMA it also didn't receive any rigorous review and fixing. This makes OOXMl a very low quality standard.
Canada should do the right and smart thing and adopt OpenDocument Format (ODF) as the standard, as have so many other countries and governments around the world."

The Visible Man: An FBI Target Puts His Whole Life Online

So it dawned on him: If being candid about his flights could clear his name, why not be open about everything? "I've discovered that the best way to protect your privacy is to give it away," he says, grinning as he sips his venti Black Eye. Elahi relishes upending the received wisdom about surveillance. The government monitors your movements, but it gets things wrong. You can monitor yourself much more accurately. Plus, no ambitious agent is going to score a big intelligence triumph by snooping into your movements when there's a Web page broadcasting the Big Mac you ate four minutes ago in Boise, Idaho. "It's economics," he says. "I flood the market."
