The Library of Tibetan Works and Archives

"In the early years of exile, refugees escaping to India carried hundreds of books out of Tibet . On the arduous journey across the Himalayas , these precious texts were often guarded above all else. Once safe in India , many of these sacred books were presented as gifts to the Dalai Lama. In order to preserve them, His Holiness conceived of and founded the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives. The cornerstone for the library's impressive Tibetan-style building was laid on 11 June 1970 in the hill station of Dharamsala, northern India , the heart of the exiled Tibetan community. In November the following year the library opened its doors for the first time, growing to become one of the most important institutions in the world dedicated to the preservation and dissemination of Tibetan culture. To this day pious Tibetans “circumambulate” the library day and night in reverence of the sacred texts housed within."

Playing Zendo

"With Zendo, one player takes on the role of “Master” for the game. Everyone else is a player. The Master determines a rule for the game and then constructs two “koans” from Icehouse pyramids. One koan exhibits the rule and one koan does not exhibit the rule and they are marked with a white and black stone, respectively, to represent this. A koan that represents the rule is said to have the Buddha-nature, while one that does not meet the rule’s criteria, does not have a Buddha-nature. The players are not told what the rule actually is though. (It can be simple or complex, such as “A koan has the Buddha-nature if it has at least one green pyramid and exactly one upright pyramid.”)"

Teachings on the Offering of Flowers

"In the summer, flowers of distinctive designs and colors, redolent with all kinds of pleasing fragrance beyond measure grow in great abundance on trees, fields, and lakes, covering this great earth. Even the most humble among us can collect them without fear of depletion."

Should the secret mantra be secret?

"Nowadays we tend to see secrecy as a bad thing. When secrets are kept by governments, we suspect repression, and as recent events in Tibet have shown, we’re often right on that count. On the personal level, the secrets people keep from each other are found as plot devices, from Shakespeare to soap operas, that lead to all kinds of conflict and sorrow. In our post-Enlightenment (and I mean the 18th-century kind) world, do we need secrecy?"

Buddhism - Religion Facts

"Founded in India 2,500 years ago, Buddhism remains the dominant religion of the Far East and is increasingly popular in the West. Over its long history Buddhist has developed into a wide variety of forms, ranging from an emphasis on religious rituals and worship of deities to a complete rejection of both rituals and deities in favor of pure meditation. But all share in common a great respect for the teachings of the Buddha, "The Enlightened One."

Siddhartha's Intent International

"Founded in 1989 by Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche, Siddhartha's Intent is an international Buddhist association of non-profit centers, most of which are nationally registered societies and charities, with the principal intention of preserving the Buddhist teachings, as well as increasing an awareness and understanding of the many aspects of the Buddhist teaching, beyond the limits of cultures and traditions. Siddhartha's awakening from the illusion of permanence gives us reason to refer to him as the Buddha, the Awakened One. Now, 2,500 years later, we see that what he discovered and taught is a priceless treasure that has inspired millions.
