Percentage dimensions of the holy grail layout

"The CSS used for this layout is 100% valid and hack free. To overcome Internet Explorer's broken box model, no horizontal padding or margins are used. Instead, this design uses percentage widths and clever relative positioning."

The Web Time Forgot

"In 1934, Otlet sketched out plans for a global network of computers (or “electric telescopes,” as he called them) that would allow people to search and browse through millions of interlinked documents, images, audio and video files. He described how people would use the devices to send messages to one another, share files and even congregate in online social networks. He called the whole thing a “réseau,” which might be translated as “network” — or arguably, “web.”"

“Where do people find the time?”

"this fifteen-minute Web 2.0 talk by Clay Shirky—about gin, television, the “cognitive surplus,” and the true answer to the annoying question in the title of this post—grabbed me and wouldn’t let go."

Spore Creature Creator Available Today

"Today EA's Spore Creature Creator is available for download. It's a utility that lets users design their own creatures for the forthcoming "massively single-player" online game (release date right now for the full game is September 7 of this year). The Creature Creator is available as a $10 download for PC and Mac or as a free demo that includes roughly 25 percent of the options included in the full version. Check out PCMag.com for a slideshow of the Creature Creator in action; our Editor-in-Chief, Lance Ulanoff, has been playing with it for a while, so these are his very own creatures."

Anatomy of a runaway IT project

"The following document is the actual text — carefully redacted — of a memo I wrote some time back [i.e., several years ago] after performing an IT project review; names and identifying concepts have been changed to preserve confidentiality (and protect the guilty). The project in question was a major IT re-engineering effort for a mission-critical system; at the time I did this review, the project had been going on for several years and had cost millions of dollars; it would eventually be canceled and the work products abandoned. The memo itself provides an interesting glimpse into just how a major IT project can go so far off the tracks that nothing useful is ever delivered."

Another Village Is Plastic-bag Free Zone

"Modbury was the first town in England to become a plastic-bag free zone and now Kew, a picturesque village in London, is joining the club. As a result of a local, high-profile campaign by the likes of Zac Goldsmith (founder of Ecologist magazine and local Conservative candidate), 50 local shops, including the Royal Botanical Gardens, have agreed to give up giving out plastic carrier bags as of July 1. Instead a cornstarch, biodegradable bag that is fully compostable will be made available for a small charge. Nice cotton shopping bags will also be available."
