A return to make-do and mend

"In the report issued yesterday, peers sitting on the science and technology committee said consumers must learn to repair old clothes and be given the impression it is “socially unacceptable” to waste goods of any kind.

However, sewing aficionados across Wales say shoppers are already changing their attitudes, causing a surge in the numbers taking up crafts commonly practised by their grandparents."

1 Cents or 2 Pence A Mile ZeCar Designed in Wales

"A zero-emission car that does the equivalent of 250 miles to the gallon is set to roll off the production line this summer, its manufacturers have said. Stevens Vehicles say their electric cars and vans will cost under 2p a mile to run.

The start-up company, which has its headquarters in Port Talbot, south Wales, boasts its vehicles will not produce toxins, pollutants, particulates, carbon derivatives or greenhouses gases - and do not require road tax. They can also be charged overnight from any standard 13 amp electric socket."

Price to pay for giving up the car

"THE Assembly Government will have to find another £30m for transport if it wants to get commuters out of their cars, a consortium of 10 councils has warned.

The South East Wales Transport Alliance (Sewta) has put out for consultation a detailed blueprint for transport in the region from Bridgend to the English border until 2015.

But the body says its plans, which could help to end the area’s 100-year love affair with the car, cannot be implemented unless the Assembly Government increases its transport budget from between £60m and £70m to £100m a year."

Why car drivers should be grateful to bus passengers

"The bus is the unsung hero of Welsh transport. It carries around 119 million passenger journeys every year. If those people shifted to car, we’d have at least 50 million more car journeys adding to traffic jams, pollution and the shortage of parking. Even if you never use the bus, you should be grateful it’s there."

New library – a lot of glass, plenty of class

"Until now the six-storey library, which has been built by Laing O’Rourke and is funded by the St David’s Partnership, had been concealed by plastic sheeting as builders worked to complete the 55,000sq ft building.

The public can now see parts of the brass and glazed building, which also has blue, red and green panels, designed to look like books on a bookshelf from a distance."
