Faith manages on Babylon 5

"Back in the mid-nineties, around the time when Star Trek: The Next Generation was spinning off Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, a refreshingly new sci-fi television show premiered -- Babylon 5. "

"The third principle of sentient life is the capacity for self-sacrifice, the conscious ability to override evolution and self-preservation for a cause, a friend, a loved one. ... All my life I've searched for a way to serve others. To me there is no higher calling, no greater destiny than to live for another, and if necessary, to die for another. To somehow make the world a better place." -- Draal

Old Baldy: 1863

"October 1863. "Culpeper, Virginia. Gen. George G. Meade's horse, Baldy." Wet plate glass negative, photographer unknown"

http://www.shorpy.com/node/4536

"I like the idea that the picture is putting into my head, that Old Baldy is about to undergo some "training," wearing a surcingle and side reins, which would have been used on a lunge line to give the horse exercise without the burden of a rider. It helps them find their own balance and develop back muscles that can atrophy after long hours under a rider. Good to think that his "people" were thinking about that, as sometimes it seems horses were simply tools."

The Proper Use of Humility

"To be humble is to take specific actions in anticipation of your own errors. To confess your fallibility and then do nothing about it is not humble; it is boasting of your modesty."

List of problems solved by MacGyver

"This is a list of problems that have been solved by the fictional character MacGyver from the television series of the same name. (This list is not yet comprehensive.) MacGyver employs his resourcefulness and his knowledge of chemistry, physics, technology, and outdoorsmanship to resolve what are often life-or-death crises. He spontaneously creates inventions from simple items to solve these problems. These inventions became synonymous with the character and were called MacGyverisms by fans. MacGyverisms became a distinct motif of the series. MacGyver was unlike secret agents in other television series and films because he carried only a Swiss Army knife and duct tape, instead of relying on high-tech weapons and tools."

Harrison Bergeron - by Kurt Vonnegut (1961)

"THE YEAR WAS 2081, and everybody was finally equal. They weren’t only equal before God and the law. They were equal every which way. Nobody was smarter than anybody else. Nobody was better looking than anybody else. Nobody was stronger or quicker than anybody else. All this equality was due to the 211th, 212th, and 213th Amendments to the Constitution, and to the unceasing vigilance of agents of the United States Handicapper General."

Why can't we divide by zero?

"The reason that the result of a division by zero is undefined is the fact that any attempt at a definition leads to a contradiction."

Ancient Lights

"Ancient lights" is a colloquialism for the "right to light," guaranteed under English law, whereby windows that have seen twenty years' worth of "uninterrupted" daylight cannot be blocked by the construction of new buildings.

The Water Babies

"The Water Babies was written by Charles Kingsley for his youngest son in 1863. His classic tale of redemption, provides a moral theme for treating others as you would wish to be treated yourself.

Zena Holloway's dream-like images inspired by The Water Babies, overlaid with illustrations by Heidi Taylor, recreate an enchanted retelling of Charles Kingsley's classic tale. A fairy tale about the underwater adventures of Tom, a young chimney sweep, who falls into a river after encountering an upper-class girl named Ellie. Tom transforms into a 'Water baby' and embarks on an epic journey, guided along the way by bizarre underwater creatures and the fairies - Mrs Doasyouwouldbedoneby and Mrs Bedonebyasyoudid."
