Don't Turn College into a Test: Why It's Bad to Be Good

""Sadly, the 'good student' attitude can actually block you from being motivated and connected to new ideas and networks of people."

Scheele recommends avoiding these traps by replacing "good student" behavior, obedience, and passivity with imaginativeness, friendliness, and curiosity. Rather than settling, expect more. Work to overcome shyness and fear of involvement by taking risks and building networks."

Say something in Welsh

"SaySomethingInWelsh is a new, simpler and faster way to learn Welsh.

You don’t need to read or write or do any revision - you just start speaking normally and naturally from the very beginning."

Twenty Thousand Saints

"Throughout his life, the archaeologist, Deian, has been excavating different sites on the island, pretending to look for remnants of saints, while really hoping to find the remains of his mother, whose mysterious disappearance has never been solved. In the same way, many of the other characters are forced to 'excavate' themselves and their past, to peel away the layers and to see what is really there. It's also a metaphor for Welsh identity – the incessant digging that the Welsh are engaged in, longing for their past to explain their present. I also like the idea that the earth has its own secrets and that archaeologists spend their entire lives trying to uncover them – the earth knows what has gone before, and is much more knowledgable than the people who traipse around on top of it. But the metaphor is double-edged – the earth can't explain everything – and one needs to find a way to live life in the present, to tread ground that is new and untouched, to find a Welsh identity that looks to the future."

Secrets of successful self publishing with Lulu.com

"The advantage from a publisher's point of view is that you don't have to pay to print a large batch up-front and you don't have to fill your garage with those books until you can sell them. Lulu provides ecommerce facilities and customer service, which means the service can be fully automated from the publisher's point of view. There are no set-up costs. You set your own price (as long as it's above the cost Lulu wants to charge you for printing), and Lulu will pay you the profits directly.

The disadvantage of using print on demand is that it's more expensive per book than it would be if you printed a large batch through a conventional publisher. If you're aiming for conventional distribution through shops with an ISBN, it can work out prohibitively expensive once the retail margin is factored in. Because each book is printed when the customer orders, it can take a couple of weeks for books to arrive.

My own experience using Lulu has been fantastic and I'm happy to recommend it. Even if you're producing a mass market work, print on demand can be a good way to test your product before committing to a large print run. "
