Save the planet — ban cycle helmets

"Cycle helmets are the most visible and potent symbol of all that’s wrong with Britain’s (anti-)cycling culture. Cycle helmets say we cannot cycle without the right precautions, the right equipment, the right infrastructure, the right training. Cycle helmets say there must be more to cycling than a person, two wheels and the surface of the Earth. Cycle helmets say that cycling is more dangerous than not cycling. Let’s ban them now before it’s too late."

Should bike helmets be compulsory?

Bradley Wiggins - Sergey Ponomarev/AP
"A statement from British Cycling, which looks after Team GB cyclists and Bradley Wiggins, called for cycling to be “brought into the heart of transport policy” and told The Times today: “Helmets can help save lives in many incidents and we recommend they are worn, but what would contribute much, much more to making cycling safer is better road infrastructure.” "

Introducing Enfys - Cardiff's Cycle Network

"Cardiff’s taking cycling seriously.

The public and cycling groups across Cardiff have had a say in how the network of cycle routes across the city needs to be improved.

A sympathetic ear to pavement cyclists

"... it would appear cyclists are neither welcome on the road nor the pavement. Where exactly can we cycle in peace without fear of being injured or killed by people who can’t quite seem to grasp the idea we have rights too?"

Pavement cyclists targeted by police in Canton, Cardiff

"Police have begun a "zero tolerance" crackdown on cyclists using pavements in parts of Cardiff. But transport campaign group Sustrans Cymru says Cardiff is "significantly worse" than many cities for bikes, and says cyclists often find roads hostile."

Medical ethics paper argues for right to choose on helmet wearing

"The paper discusses mandatory cycle helmet wearing and argues that any law to make the wearing of cycle helmets mandatory in the UK should only apply only to children and not adults. The researchers argue that it is a matter of principle that people should be allowed to take risks with their health, if they choose to do so. The ethics paper, which is called Liberty or death; don’t tread on me, was published in Journal of Medical Ethics today."

Cardiff Council outlines new city cycle plan

"While this represents an encouraging improvement many people still believe that there is an even greater potential to increase cycling participation in Cardiff. It is felt that with continued investment, greater consistency of design and a strategic approach the strategic cycle network plan should ensure these year on year cycling increases."
