Does Time Exist?

"Videos from our Setting Time Aright conference are gradually filtering online, courtesy of the Foundational Questions Institute. Perhaps the very first question that should be asked, of course, is whether the subject of the conference actually exists. So we recruited two well-known partisans on this issue to hash things out. Tim Maudlin is a philosopher of science who has argued forcefully that time is real — and furthermore that the arrow of time is an intrinsic part of reality, not just a byproduct of the low-entropy Big Bang. (Crazy talk.) Julian Barbour is a physicist who is well known for arguing that time doesn’t really exist, we can happily eliminate it from all of our equations of physics. (Even crazier.)"

Time - Brad Warner

"Dogen believed that being and time were the same thing.

We are not entities who exist within time. We are time itself. This view of what we are is radically different from the view we are used to.

Dogen also believed that all of time is contained in this single moment. The entire past and the entire future are right here.

And yet our experience of time is one of being cut off from all other moments of time and all other places in space except where we are right now."

How to build a time machine

"Nothing is flat or solid. If you look closely enough at anything you'll find holes and wrinkles in it. It's a basic physical principle, and it even applies to time. Even something as smooth as a pool ball has tiny crevices, wrinkles and voids. Now it's easy to show that this is true in the first three dimensions. But trust me, it's also true of the fourth dimension. There are tiny crevices, wrinkles and voids in time. Down at the smallest of scales, smaller even than molecules, smaller than atoms, we get to a place called the quantum foam. This is where wormholes exist. Tiny tunnels or shortcuts through space and time constantly form, disappear, and reform within this quantum world. And they actually link two separate places and two different times."

NASA Announces Results of Epic Space-Time Experiment

"The space-time around Earth appears to be distorted just as general relativity predicts," says Stanford University physicist Francis Everitt, principal investigator of the Gravity Probe B mission.

UK time change 'would save CO2 emissions'

"Moving the clocks forward one hour would save hundreds of thousands of tonnes of carbon dioxide each year, campaigners say.

A study for the 10:10 climate campaign suggested putting clocks forward during winter to an hour ahead of GMT could save almost 500,000 tonnes of CO2."

'Time' not necessarily deeply rooted in our brains

"Professor Sinha said: "We have so many metaphors for time and its passing – we think of time as a 'thing' – we say 'the weekend is nearly gone'; 'she's coming up to her exams'; 'I haven't got the time', and so on, and we think such statements are objective, but they aren't. We've created these metaphors and they have become the way we think. The Amondawa don't talk like this and don't think like this, unless they learn another language.

"We didn't expect to find this – we had studied the same language earlier and were going back to further our understanding of its metaphors. We were surprised to find that space metaphors for time and the abstract concept of time are simply absent from the language and culture."

They're running on metric time!

"Now, to make dates alphabetically sortable, the most significant component must be the first. This would be the year. By the same argument, the next component must be the month, and so forth. Again, to make sorting possible, all components of the date must be equally long, so months and days are zero-padded (“06” instead of just “6”, etc), and the year is always specified with 4 digits (this also avoids any Y2K-related problems). In total, the format looks like this:

YYYY-MM-DD

Some examples:

* 2005-12-31
* 2006-03-30
* 2007-02-02
* 2008-01-21

Now, isn’t that just a thing of beauty? No longer will any date be ambiguous, and if you use this format, any program that provides alphabetical sorting (which should be pretty much any file manager) will be able to sort your folders correctly."

Stopped Clocks

"The Stopped Clocks Foundation is a public collaborative project which exists to first document all the stopped clocks in the UK, with the aim being to restore those we can to working order. Anyone can help, so please send us any information on stopped clocks in your area.

The overall aim is to try and provide the information and organisational tools for people to have clocks in their neighbourhood fixed, by collaborating in fund raising activities, and in general raising awareness of stopped clocks around the country."

The Long Now

"The Long Now Foundation was established in 01996 to develop the Clock and Library projects, as well as to become the seed of a very long term cultural institution. The Long Now Foundation hopes to provide counterpoint to today's "faster/cheaper" mind set and promote "slower/better" thinking. We hope to creatively foster responsibility in the framework of the next 10,000 years."
