Army of Therapists planned as antidepressants don’t work.

At the end of February, there was a flurry of headlines connected with the treatment of depression. It appears that powerful and modern drugs such as seroxat and prozac are about as good as placebos in alleviating the symptoms of depression. [Also see note 1]

This has given a further impetus to the rise of mindfulness based cognitive therapy (MBCT) and related cognitive behavioural therapies for alleviating depression and anxiety. In fact the government quickly announced a £170m plan to train another 3,600 psychological therapists. NICE guidelines are likely to change to place a greater emphasis on psychological therapy and a reduction in the prescribing of anti-depressant drugs.
