Bute Park needs your support to win award

"Cardiff's very own Bute Park has been short-listed for a 2012
National Lottery Award under the category Best Heritage Project.

The National Lottery Awards are an annual search to find the UK's favourite Lottery-funded projects and aim to celebrate and recognise the difference that those projects have made to people, places and communities all across the UK."

Controversial Bridge Into Bute Park

"The bridge is part of controversial changes to Bute Park to provide a new access route for lorries to enter and leave the park. Before this bridge over the Bute Dock Feeder was built, lorries had to enter and leave by one of the main pedestrian routes behind Cardiff Castle.

Despite sustained opposition from the public, and a motion of opposition, Cardiff Council (controlled by the Liberal Democrats and Plaid Cymru at the time) pushed ahead with the construction of this new bridge, which opened in 2010."

Bute Park Users Survey Debrief

"146 people were asked a series of quantitative and qualitative questions whilst walking through the park, and a further 123 have answered a similar survey online.

Park users were asked questions about their use, and impressions, of the park in general – but the particular focus was on the Restoration Project which has run since January of this year."

The 50 best picnic spots - Bute Park

"Proving that you don't always have to escape the city to seek out enough green space to throw down a picnic blanket, the Grade I listed landscape at Cardiff's most famous park has been tempting families to eat al fresco for centuries. Head up near the castle at its southern end or spread out by the water to the west."

The Ongoing Saga of Bute Park

The Bute Park Horror

"There used to be a relatively narrow trackway running along the route taken shown here, which the Council decided to replace to make it more suitable for heavy road vehicles. Coopers’ Fields lie to the left and this road is used to bring equipment, temporary buildings etc for use there. On the Council’s literature this work is described as “resurfacing”, but, as you can see from the picture, in addition to the new tarmac surface they have taken the opportunity to construct a sort of lay-by which more-or-less doubles the width of the path."

Cardiff's Bute Park scoops Wales title in Britain's Best Park contest

"Cardiff City Council's executive member for culture, leisure and parks, Nigel Howells said: "This is a fantastic achievement for Bute Park and all the staff who work so hard to make it look so fantastic year round. Following on from the park's Green Flag earlier in the year, this is another important accolade and a strong endorsement that we are getting it right in the park.""

Greens call for change to ‘arrogant command and control mindset’ of Cardiff Council

Sam Coates, Green Party candidate for Cardiff Central said:

"The programme highlights the arrogance of Council leaders. Little debate has been allowed of what the vision for the future of Cardiff should be. Few questions are asked as to what the relentless drive large scale projects means for the quality of life for ordinary residents."

"Recent development such as fragmentation of bus services to serve the new St Davids 2 shopping mall suggest the Council is only concerned with attracting visitors and their cash, and isn't interested in the needs of people who live here."

"Projects such as the road through Bute Park epitomise this developer led approach. Comments from a Council Officer suggest that the real intention of the road is to open up access for more revenue-raising events which close the park off to the general public."

Work on Cardiff park landmark to start

"Work is starting on a new landmark in a city park which replaces a long-forgotten Victorian summerhouse.

The original summerhouse in Bute Park, Cardiff, was designed by architect William Burges, known for his work on Cardiff Castle and nearby Castell Coch.

The building fell into disrepair in the 1970s and was moved to the city's St Fagans National History Museum.

A new summerhouse kiosk is now being built in the park which will echo the style of the original. "

Welsh College of Music and Drama

"This landmark development will mark a new gateway to Cardiff City from the north. It will provide first-class facilities for the College, attracting new audiences to both our students’ performances and the regular masterclasses given by international artists, as well as increasing opportunities for local performing arts organisations to promote their work."

Bute Park should be preserved

"“The Bute Parks Alliance has no political affiliation or political ambition. We are purely interested in safeguarding the parks for our this and for future generations,” she said.

“We are deeply concerned about the way that the parks have been eroded over the last 60 years.”

The campaigners have argued that the park has shrunk considerably since it was given to the city by the Marquess of Bute and should now be preserved."
