Go to jail ... for astronomical noise

"You’re not going to be sent to jail for refusal to give up encryption keys. You’re going to be sent to jail for an inability to unlock something that the police think is encrypted. Yes, this is where the hairs rise on our arms: if you have a recorded file with radio noise from the local telescope that you use for generation of random numbers, and the police asks you to produce the decryption key to show them the three documents inside the encrypted container that your radio noise looks like, you will be sent to jail for up to five years for your inability to produce the imagined documents."

Your PasswordCard

"A PasswordCard is a credit card-sized card you keep in your wallet, which lets you pick very secure passwords for all your websites, without having to remember them! You just keep them with you, and even if your wallet does get stolen, the thief will still not know your actual passwords."

Baremetal OS

"Starting with a clean slate we can say goodbye to bloated code and feature creep! As of the current version with the full CLI and internal functions, the operating system binary is only 16384 bytes. A standard "Hello, World!" example compiles to a file of only 31 bytes. "

The bowling balls

"10 November 1972: CERN’s Bent Stumpe places an order for 12 bowling balls for a total cost of 95 US dollars. Although not evident at first sight, he is buying the heart of some of the first tracking devices to be used in the SPS control room. Today, Bent Stumpe’s device would be called a desktop mouse…"

NorhTec Gecko - AA-powered netbook

"The netbook runs on 8 rechargeable AA batteries as well as lithium battery packs that are easily sourced. This makes it easy to replace a dead battery and if you need to get back from a drained state, you can just buy a few AA batteries as replacements if you don’t have access to a power outlet. If you do have access to one, there’s no power brick required and you can just use a generic power cable to charge the unit and the batteries at the same time."

About Programming Style - Jari Aalto

"Well written programs will save time whenever examined, changed or reviewed. If the outcome is unreadable, it will be difficult and time-consuming to find and correct the errors in it. Making changes and testing those changes also take more time and cost valuable human resources. "

Marchant Calculator

"The Marchant Calculating Machine Co. was founded in 1911 by Rodney and Alfred Marchant in Oakland, California.

The company built mechanical, and then electromechanical calculators which had a reputation for reliability. Employee Carl Friden designed a new model in 1918 in response to patent challenges. It was a great success, and Friden became the chief designer until he left in 1934 to found his own company. In 1958 the company was acquired by the Smith Corona typewriter company in a diversification move that proved unsound; the company, which was now known as SCM, tried to stay competitive by introducing the SCM Cogito 240SR electronic calculator (designed by Manhattan Project veteran Stan Frankel) in 1965. Within a few years a tidal wave of cheaper electronic calculators had devastated their business, and by the mid 1980s, SCM's typewriter business, too, had been ruined by the advent of inexpensive personal computers used as word processors."

1964 Antique MODEM Live Demo

"This modem was given to me ~1989 by the widow of a retired (IBM?) engineer. Computerhistory.org has a Model B dated 1965, and I've seen a ~1967 Model C written up in a magazine. (Interestingly, incorrectly identified as being only 110 baud.)

Even better than seeing it in a museum, I decide to hook the trusty Model A up and make it talk to something. After some trial and error, I manage to get it to talk to a terminal server at work and use it to connect to a linux box. It's ALIVE! So, 45 years after it's creation, this antique modem gets to send data to and from the modern Internet."

The Amazing World of Version Numbers

"Except…version numbers long ago stopped being version numbers. Software companies started using them as marketing weapons. They tried varying methods of assigning identities to applications, such as naming them after years. They decided that numbers were too dry and substituted letters and words that were meant to be more evocative."

Patterns and string processing in shell scripts

"Shell programming is heavily dependent on string processing. The term string is used generically to refer to any sequence of characters; typical examples of strings might be a line of input or a single argument to a command. Users enter responses to prompts, file names are generated, and commands produce output. Recurring throughout this is the need to determine whether a given string conforms to a given pattern; this process is called pattern matching. The shell has a fair amount of built-in pattern matching functionality."
