Reforest Patagonia Announces Plans to Plant One Million Trees in Chile

"An ambitious citizen campaign called Reforest Patagonia is hoping to plant one million trees in Chilean Patagonia in what has been considered the largest, most ambitious native tree reforestation campaign in the country's history. Chile was ravaged by wildfires in 2011, so the project hopes to repopulate the country's six national parks and reserves."

Wales’ 100,000 hectare target for more trees

"One of the Welsh Government's lesser-known but highly desirable targets is to substantially increase Wales' woodland cover over the next 20 years, by 100,000 hectares. If achieved that would mean that
trees, compared with some 14 per cent today, would cover about 20 per cent of Wales. The main aim is to mitigate the impacts of climate change – trees absorb carbon – but other benefits would be substantial as well.

Farmers would have an increased source of timber to use for fuel and for fencing. Trees provide shade for livestock and help control water flowing off the uplands. And wildlife benefits, too, from the more varied habitats that are created."

"The last (and only) defense against the ongoing Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is tiny—billions of hydrocarbon-chewing microbes, such as Alcanivorax borkumensis. In fact, the primary motive for using the more than 830,000 gallons of chemical dispersants on the oil slick both above and below the surface of the sea is to break the oil into smaller droplets that bacteria can more easily consume."

New charity to take control of English and Welsh canals and waterways

"The government opened a consultation on Wednesday to decide the future of English and Welsh inland waterways, and to discuss how the countries' canals and rivers should be managed.

A new charity is to be set up as part of the transfer of control of the network from British Waterways and the Environment Agency. The transfer is a key part of the government's promised abolition of quangos, which has also seen the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) abolish a large proportion of its arms-length bodies."

Wales' first solar park powers up in Pembrokeshire

"The first solar park in Wales is expected to start converting sunlight into electricity later at the Rhosygilwen estate in Pembrokeshire.

Almost 10,000 solar panels have been imported from the United States and are placed in 12 lines in a six-acre field.

The £2.5m investment will be onstream three weeks before the UK government lowers the subsidy for large-scale solar energy investors."
