Ngakma Nor'dzin - Author Interview

"Describe your book ‘Relaxing into Meditation’ in 30 words or less.

It describes practices of relaxation, breathing and meditation. Learn to relax the body and calm breathing. Then take that quietness into meditation and discover relaxation of mind. "

QR code and laminating fun

"QR codes are a new discovery for me and I have created one that points people to this blog. I experimented with colouring it and found that my mobile could still read it as long as the contrast remained good. Hopefully people will walk past Tharpa Ling with their smart phones and pick up the link."

Spacious Passion by Ngakma Nor'dzin via iTunes

"A Buddhist book exploring the sutric teaching of 'The Four Thoughts that turn the Mind to Practice' as vividly relevant to our everyday lives: the extraordinarily precious opportunity to live as an honourable human being; the experience of impermanence that pervades our existence as an opportunity to awaken; the emotional and psychological patterning which dominates our lives (karma); and the seemingly endless cycle of dissatisfaction in which we imprison ourselves. Each chapter ends with a series of questions and answers which are both pragmatic and inspirational. Ngakma Nor'dzin has been a practitioner of Tibetan Buddhism for more than twenty years."

"'ö-Dzin inherited a set of tubular bells from his great grandfather. They have been languishing in a box for decades and finally we have pulled them out, polished them up and hung them somewhere they can be played. There are only eight of them so what can be played is fairly limited and the music notation we have is nearly all hymns. I remember this tune from my days of learning to play the recorder in junior school - a long time ago!"

Could you tell us a little bit about yourself?

I am 56 years old, have just celebrated 26 years of marriage, and have two grown up sons. I live in Cardiff with my husband. I have been a Buddhist for over 30 years and have been a teacher for all my professional life. I teach Buddhism, Tibetan yoga, meditation and relaxation. I also practice pulse diagnosis and reflexology. I was brought up in the West Midlands of England but moved to Wales at the beginning of the 1980s after completing a design degree.

Ngakma Nor'dzin : New Year Radio

"I would like to suggest that we resolve to begin a daily practice of meditation in 2011. This is something we can do with our children. Daily meditation enables the development of greater awareness and this can bring lasting fulfilment and happiness. Developing awareness illuminates the patterns that dominate our lives that cause us to feel unhappy and dissatisfied. Through regular meditation practice increased clarity begins to sparkle through into our everyday life and we become happier and more fulfilled. Through being happier and more fulfilled we become kinder people. Through becoming kinder people we bring happiness to those around us. Meditation practice—just ten minutes every day—has the potential to benefit everyone and everything everywhere. "

“In Cardiff they name roads as salutations to angels” - Ngakma Nor'dzin

"My first impression of Cardiff was somewhat romantic. My dearest friend – later to become my husband – lived in ‘Hail Gabriel’. How fantastic I thought – in Cardiff they name roads as salutations to angels. I later learned that ‘hail’ was in fact ‘heol’ and simply meant ‘road’, but by that time I was already in love with Cardiff and it mattered not."

Ngakma Nor'dzin : Surya Eco Yoga Camp

"In July I took Tharpa Ling—our free-standing awning manifesting as a meditation tent—to the Surya Eco Yoga Camp in Cornwall. With one of our senior students, Ngakpa Samten, I led meditation sessions, yogic song and sKu-mNyé (Tibetan Yoga). We met some really lovely people and hopefully taught a few practices that will be useful to them in their lives."

Ngakma Nor'dzin : Author's interview with Cathy B. Stucker

"My new book is called Relaxing into Meditation. Published 13th August 2010. The wish to learn to meditate is commonly expressed, but people often have little understanding of what meditation is. They want to meditate to feel more relaxed, but struggle to establish a regular practice because they find that meditation actually requires effort and application, and can be challenging. In this book I offer exercises to help people relax the body and calm the mind before introducing meditation practices. I discuss how meditation ultimately leads to complete relaxation of mind and body, and offer a practical approach to how this can be achieved."

Why a Good Author Photo Goes a Long Way

"Many authors came with a sample of their book or had a handout with a little blurb and a photo of themselves. It was interesting to see how different each author’s photo was and how much some stood out in my mind – even after talking with so many people. I realized that many people new to the writing profession might not know how important a good photo of themselves is or how much it can help further their career."

http://www.lulu.com/blog/2010/06/04/why-a-good-author-photo-matters/

"A good author photo really helps with marketability. Almost always, when the media wants to highlight an author in a piece, they will ask for a hi-resolution image of the author and book cover. I have heard of instances where some reporters found a book that is perfect for a piece, but have to go with someone else because the photo they receive from the author is not very good and they can’t use it. It pays to have a quality headshot or even just a clear, straight-on picture of yourself in front of a nice background. It doesn’t have to be elaborate, it just shouldn’t be a picture from a bachelor party of the author hanging out on the couch."
