Finding Archimedes in the Shadows

"And we see, throughout, hints of someone standing triumphant at the borders of the ancient world, peering at us through accumulated catastrophes and layers of destruction, and surviving — just like the hero of any good thriller. "

Mirroring Is Not a Backup Solution

"Journalspace.com has fallen and can't get up. The post on their site describes how their entire database was overwritten through either some inconceivable OS or application bug, or more likely a malicious act. Regardless of how the data was lost, their undoing appears to have been that they treated drive mirroring as a backup and have now paid the ultimate price for not having point-in-time backups of the data that was their business."

Very Long-Term Backup

"One side of the disk contains a graphic teaser. The design shows headlines in the eight major languages of the world today spiraling inward in ever-decreasing size till it becomes so small you have trouble reading it, yet the text goes on getting smaller. The sentences announce: “Languages of the World: This is an archive of over 1,500 human languages assembled in the year 02008 C.E. Magnify 1,000 times to find over 13,000 pages of language documentation.” "

Backing up Large Files

"There are quite a few programs for backing up files, some with graphical interfaces, some with web interfaces and others which work from the command line. They are mostly designed to do scheduled backups to a server or hard disc but I wanted a straighforward way to make one-off backups of some large files to DVDs or a USB drive. I decided, therefore, to use a simple command line procedure to do most of the work. It takes only two commands to create the archive and three to restore the archive and check it for errors."

Review:

"First, they offer GPLv3 code that they’ve developed for use with SpiderOak, to the general public. Any company with a “giving back” attitude like that, gets a big thumbs up in my book. Second - they offer a free 2GB of storage. Similar to other services yes, but there are some that don’t have any free storage, rather a “trial period”. So if you only want to backup 2GB worth of files using SpiderOak, you’ll never have to pay. Third - they are actually cross platform. Not just Mac and Windows cross platform, but Mac, Windows and Linux (Ubuntu/Debain)."

Easy local and remote backup of your home network

"I hate making backups by hand. It costs a lot of time and usually I have far better things to do. Long ago (in the Windows 98 era) I made backups to CD only before I needed to reïnstall the OS, which was about once every 18 months, and my code projects maybe twice as often. A lot has changed since those dark times though. My single PC expanded into a network with multiple desktops and a server, I installed a mix of Debian an Ubuntu and ditched Windows, and I have a nice broadband link - just as my friends do. Finally a lazy git like me can set up a decent backup system that takes care of itself, leaving me time to do the "better" things (such as writing about it :-)

There are already quite a few tutorials on the internet explaining various ways to backup your Linux system using built-in commands and a script of some sorts, but I could not find one that suited me so I decided to write another one - one that takes care of backing up my entire network."
